Local Area Information

Woodbridge is a charming riverside market town with excellent pubs, book shops, antique shops, Restaurants and delicatessens and bakeries selling fresh local produce. Market day is on Thursday.

This area is perfect for touring, cycling or walking holidays with some excellent trails and woodland walks. It’s just a short drive to the beach at Shingle Street and Orford, a coastal village with a fascinating 12th century castle keep. Visit nearby Aldeburgh, a quintessential seaside town on the Suffolk coast. Be sure to pick up some fish and chips and picnic on the beach! Snape with its famous Maltings and concert rooms is on the way and Southwold and Warbleswick a bit further on (wonderful traditional seaside resorts)

The national trust site of Sutton Hoo is very close and can be seen on the opposite side of the river.It has both excellent permanent and visiting exhibitions as well as a great cafe. There are tours of the house and the archeological remains featured in the recent film “The Dig.”

The local restaurant the Unruly Pig recently won first prize in the taste of East of England award and came second in the best gastro pub in the UK. Booking is essential.

There is a great walk up the river (turn left when you reach there)  to Deben cafe bar on HMS Vale. If you want to carry on there is the popular Wilford bridge pub a bit further on that serves pub food.

The town square is a must see. It’s an elegant Georgian square, housing the original Shire Hall. It is flanked by interesting shops. Be sure to visit the C15th Kings Head pub at the top of the square. St Mary the Virgin church is close by to here and worth a visit.

If you turn right when you reach the River Deben you will soon reach the famous tidal mill. Seen in all pictures of Woodbridge. You can visit. 

A little further along from the mill is the riverside area. Recently developed with shops, restaurants and 2 museums. Nearby here is the independent and excellent riverside cinema.

There are lots of sailing boats and house boats all along the river estuary creating a wonderful scene.

Sit and listen in one of the promenade shelters. You can watch curlews, redshank, avocets, godwits and many other wading birds whilst listening to the bird song and the rattling of the boats mainstays.
